Recently, one of our longstanding timber industry customers approached us for a redesign of their head and tail chipper infeed sprocket assemblies. With recent modifications to their Chipper Deck, their existing sprocket setup also required changes for enhanced performance. The previous sprocket design did not allow for differential chain pitch elongation or material egress through the sprocket teeth. This was causing erratic chain operation with the chain jumping over the sprocket teeth.

Tail / Idler Sprocket

To accommodate the three strands of WH132XHDIBR welded steel mill chain, we engineered a 12-tooth idler sprocket. The middle sprocket features a ring style friction lock bush which securely holds it in place. The two outer sprockets utilise our ACM Tribotex 7 composite plastic bushes, allowing them to both independently rotate on the shaft. This innovative design ensures that each chain strand can elongate at its own rate, significantly reducing the risk of the chain jumping a tooth which can lead to costly damage to both the chains and sprockets. Custom shaft collars are used to prevent any lateral movement of the outer sprockets along the shaft.

Head / Drive Sprocket

Our head sprocket assembly draws inspiration from our proven drag chain sprocket designs. Featuring a 10-tooth drum configuration tailored for the WH132XHDIBR welded steel chain, each sprocket plate is welded to the drum for enhanced durability. Equipped with ring style friction lock bushes on both the left and right side A-Plates, the design allows for removal of the entire sprocket assembly from the shaft for efficient maintenance and future servicing needs. All sprocket A-Plates were made from abrasion resistant 400 BHN wear plate.

Supply Services WH132XHDIBR welded steel mill chain provides extra heavy-duty service with 5/8” x 2” sidebars and 1″ rivets. All components are through hardened with additional induction hardening of the barrel and further induction case hardening of the rivet. All features that are necessary to survive the rigours of the log chipping process.
