Magnetic Head Pulley Helps Rosvall Sawmill Reduce Operating Costs

Supply Services Ltd proudly offers Innovative Magnetic Technologies (IMT) magnetic products from Canada. The products are cleverly designed to provide continuous protection for your processing equipment. IMT magnets effectively remove ferrous tramp metal, safeguarding equipment from costly damage and preventing product contamination.

Industrial strength magnetic solutions from IMT

IMT offer a wide range of products to suit most applications such as:

  • Suspended plate magnets
  • Magnetic plate separators
  • Magnetic head pulleys
  • Cross belt separators
  • Vibratory magnetic separators
  • Electro-magnets and much more…
A magnetic head pulley from Innovative Magnetic Technologies (IMT).

A Magnetic Head Pulley is a conveyor belt head pulley with an industrial strength magnet cleverly mounted inside it. This provides a reliable process for removing tramp metal from the bulk material on a conveyor belt. Utilising Grade 8 permanent magnets, the magnetic field adheres ferrous material to the conveyor belt as clean product passes over the pulley. Tramp material is directed back beneath the conveyor belt into a bin to then be discarded.

A diagram demonstrates how a magnetic head pulley captures ferrous material from a conveyor belt and discards it below.

Power failures or fluctuations will not affect the separator’s performance, and the magnet is guaranteed for the life of the application. IMT Magnetic Head Pulleys replace existing head pulleys and are available in a wide range of sizes and options with no electrical hookup required. There are no moving parts so little maintenance is required.

A magnetic head pulley is installed within a conveyor belt to collect ferrous material.
Rosvall Sawmill’s experience with a magnetic head pulley

Rosvall Sawmill located at Whareora, just outside of Whangārei, recently installed an IMT Magnetic Head Pulley with excellent results. This pulley, as shown above, measures Ø305mm x 645mm in length. Positioned before the chipper, its crucial role is to remove ferrous material before it enters the chipper. If hard ferrous material gets into the chipper, it can cause significant damage to the chipper knives. Not only are the knives expensive to replace, but the time and labour required for replacement, as well as the production downtime, can result in substantial financial losses.

Ferrous material picked up from the magnetic head pulley within a conveyor belt.

By installing this pulley, Rosvall Sawmill has taken proactive steps to minimise this risk, ensuring high-quality finished products. Rosvall Sawmill offers a variety of timber products, including Appearance Grades, Structural Grades, and Industrial Grade. With Windsor Kilns, a multipurpose pressure treatment plant, and a planer mill on-site, they can produce high-quality finished timber products for every market.

A conveyor belt at a sawmill utilises a magnetic head pulley to remove ferrous material before entering a chipper.
During our planning around the infeed to the chipper we had to think about all the possibilities that could cause damage to our chipper, because all our waste timber from all over the site goes to the waste pile, except for treated timber, and we can’t control what goes in there. Our biggest concern was unwanted material like nails and screws and then the odd tool, lol.

Our best option ended up being the magnetic drum. Since we installed the magnetic drum we haven’t had any unwanted material go into the chipper and we take out around 10 different pieces of steel material per week, that is from a nail to a bolt and even the smallest of washers.
